SENEGAL-AND-THE-UNITED-STATES-AGRICULTURE-COMMUNITY / NIAGUIS :
An AMERICAN organization "impressed" by the achievements of the "Karonghère Wati Nianing" agroecological center

Niaguis, Nov 13 (APS) - Solane Lemma, President and CEO of the American organization "Thousand Currents", said she was "impressed" by the achievements of the "Karonghère Wati Nianing" rural agroecology training center in Niaguis, in the Ziguinchor region (south), founded by the pan-African rural women's movement "Nous sommes la solution" (We are the solution).

"I'm impressed by what we've seen here. Agroecology can not only feed people but also preserve our environment," enthused Solane Lemma, President and CEO of Thousand Currents.

She was speaking at the end of a field visit to the Karonghère Wati Nianing center, in the commune of Niaguis, to strengthen her partnership with the pan-African rural women's movement "Nous sommes la solution" (We are the solution), whose aim is to promote agroecological practices.

"Communities around the world today are faced with many types of problems, but they themselves are the solution to these problems. Karonghère Wati Nianing is an excellent center, which is proof of this," emphasized Ms. Lemma.

She added that the organization she heads had come to support the residents of the agroecological center.

We're at their side to support them and implement their ideas and solutions. So we're here to help them realize their dream," she said.

Mamadou Danfakha, coordinator of the pan-African rural women's movement "Nous sommes la solution" (We are the solution) and initiator of the Karonghère Wati Nianing center, expressed his delight at receiving the President and CEO of "Thousand Currents".

"Today, we welcome one of our strategic partners, Thousand Currents, an American organization based in the United States, which has been supporting our activities for eight years now," he explained.

A presence in eight African countries

He went on to say that "Karonghère Wati Nianing" is a training, experimentation and demonstration center for activities linked to agriculture, livestock breeding, fish farming and beekeeping, and that it is "in the process of promoting peasant agroecology in eight member countries of the "We are the solution" movement.

Mariama Sonko, president of the movement, highlighted the particularity of using organic and sustainable products in their agroecological activities in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali and Senegal.

"Today, our movement is in the promotion of agroecological practices that value farmers' seeds. This is how we use organic fertilizers and bio-protectors. These organic seeds enable us to boost soil fertility and production yields", she said.

"In the eight countries where our movement is present, we have set up agroecological farms and are trying to promote peasant agroecology by rural women," added Mariama Sonko.
