The Nous Sommes la Solution (NSS) movement was launched in 2011 by twelve rural women's organizations from Burkina Faso (2 organizations), Ghana (2), Guinea (2), Mali (3) and Senegal (3), led by their leaders. Over 500 Rural Women's Associations (RWAs) have joined since then, and the movement has 175,000 members and supporters across West Africa. Created as an expression of women's rights within a global campaign for food sovereignty envisaged by the continent's peasant movements, NSS has established itself in the field of sustainable peasant alternatives that are economically profitable, socially and ecologically viable.

Why are we the solution?

In Africa, family farming plays a central role in the diet and economy of around 70% of the population. It accounts for the bulk of agricultural production, but the farmers who create this wealth have little access to land and production resources. Despite these difficulties, rural family farms have maintained and even improved food production thanks to effective adaptation and diversification strategies. The We are the solution movement was born to promote the voice of peasants in agricultural governance at local, national and continental levels.

Our structure

Transformed from a campaign (2011-2014) to a movement, NSS held its first general assembly in 2017. Since then, decisions and orientations have been given by the movement's competent bodies, made up of 100% rural women. Each member country is represented by one person on the Board of Directors, which elects the Executive Committee from among its members. Technical support from the NGO Fahamu Africa, which has accompanied the movement since its birth in 2011, is gradually being reduced in view of the pronounced leadership of the movement's leaders.
